Last Thursday we had the opportunity to listen to Brother and Sister Tateoka’s experiences of living through the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami. I was excited for the class because I knew it would be good; but, the class literally left me speechless. The amount of support we had at the class was awesome! I counted over 150 people. I am amazed by the interest, support, and love of our group. I hope those of you who attended the class were as impressed with the information as I was.
I don’t think I have ever contemplated what being in an earthquake would feel like. Brother and Sister Tateoka’s description of what was happening — everything flying through the air and feeling like you were on a bucking bronco — brought the experience to life for me. Another thing I’ve always wondered about is how people would react to needing to share the provisions they have stored. It’s humbling to find out these people gave everything they had even when it meant putting themselves in danger of not having adequate supplies for themselves. I can’t imagine standing in food, water, and fuel lines for hours everyday for over a month just to meet my family’s basic needs. That fact alone really drove home the importance of all of us needing to be prepared.
I was moved by the stories of faith, love and endurance. The overwhelming message seemed to be that God knows us, he loves us, and will help us overcome unbearable situations. I was uplifted by the stories of members in other areas of Japan coming to the rescue and the huge response from the LDS church — along with others — to bring in relief supplies and materials — not only food and medication, but also scooters, freezers, etc.
I am more committed than ever to be prepared both physically and spiritually and have the supplies necessary to help my family and others as well. I have downloaded a video of the class and posted it on the website. Find a time to watch it when you will be uninterrupted and let me know what you learned and felt while watching it.

Seed Starting Class
Our seed starting class was held last Saturday and again we had a great turnout!!! It was a wonderful class! I loved the information that was prepared and the questions that we were able to cover after the class. I have also downloaded the seed starting class to the website.
Starting your own garden seeds sounds fun and easy enough to jump in!!! Dianna says “it’s addicting”. I appreciate the members in our Stake who share their talents and knowledge with us. Learning these skills can help us save money, save time, eat healthier, and more. Sometimes we learn topics that cost a little more to get started or take more time than purchasing something at the store. However, learning these skills, gathering the necessary supplies, and practicing NOW rather than later when they are mandatory for survival is the smart thing to do.
January is a great time to rededicate yourself to emergency preparedness. Be a contributor not a moocher!!! because “mooching just isn’t cool” 🙂 .
