Hi Friends,
I don’t know about you, but 72 hour kits are one of my biggest stresses as far as emergency prep is concerned. Just when I think I have them perfectly updated etc., I figure out I’m missing something – like WATER!!! A couple of years ago for the Stake emergency drill I had this awesome idea to have my neighborhood check out their 72 hour kits, try making a meal from it etc. I was feeling pretty good about myself, personally just happy to have it checked off of my “to do” list. I know you all expect more of me but realistically I have the same issues about getting emergency preparedness done as everyone else, it’s an ongoing process for everyone! Sorry, back to my story. So I’m pretty happy with myself, I might have even patted myself on the back (only once or twice) when to my horror I figured out I didn’t have any water in my backpacks. AGH… Of all the items to forget, I picked what would have surely been the absolute WORST!!! When I mess up, I try to do it BIG! Soooo… I know, short story… long version. I am issuing a challenge for Conference weekend (hold for dramatic pause!) Will you all pull out your 72 hour kits at some point this weekend. Let your kids eat all of the food that will expire soon and replace it with new. Replace any clothing that doesn’t fit anymore. Figure out what items you are missing and want to add. The order form this month (I’m attaching it to this email) is full of items for 72 hour kits, car kits, work kits, etc. You have a couple of options. You can group the 5 pre-made kits together to make a complete kit (minus the clothing!) or just order the misc. items that you need. I absolutely LOVE the rolling backpacks and duffle bag – why carry something when you can roll it! I also love the compression bags for clothing, coats, etc. not only does it make it a lot smaller (and let’s be honest, fitting everything into the backpack is the hardest part about 72 hour kits) but it also makes it waterproof! BRILLIANT!!! My idea, yes you can thank me later J The heavy blanket is one of my all time favorites, so awesome for your cars, motor homes, etc. They stay folded bouncing around the car and are awesome even when your emergency is a frigid baseball game! I use mine all the time. You will notice that not every item you need for 72 hour kits will be on the order form. This is why you need to collect things throughout the year from the order forms to put in your 72 hour kit (i.e. in May you will want to pick up the Solar Flashlight from GoalZero, in June you will want the JetBoil, etc.) I can’t put every item we offer through the year onto this order form so pay attention each month and look for items you want to add to your kits. Tip: make a list of everything in each kit so you can quickly check what’s in each kit w/out having to tear it apart!
